How much life insurance do you need?

A message from the MEMBERS Financial Services Program

Thinking about your mortality and discussing life insurance are probably not your favorite pastimes, but there are some very basic and important points you should know – especially for determining how much life insurance you need.

One rule of thumb is that you need life insurance coverage equal to five or seven times your annual gross income.  But your needs may be more or less.  So take the time to make a more accurate estimate.

If you’re part of a couple, do a separate calculation for each of you.  And if one of you stays home to care for children or a dependant, evaluate whether you need life insurance to pay for childcare and household services that would have to be replaced in the event of death.

And if the only insurance you have is a group term life policy provided by your employer, consider buying an individual policy. You can convert a group policy to individual coverage if you leave your job, but that’s not necessarily your best option – especially if your health deteriorates.  So it’s a good idea to secure a policy that best meets your needs now.

To help you make the best determinations, you can work with a CUNA Mutual Life Insurance representative for a life insurance needs analysis.  The whole process usually takes less than a half hour and includes:

·        a review of your current coverage

·        a calculation of your total life insurance needs

·        a customized recommendation for you

This is a no-cost, no-obligation benefit exclusively for YEFCU members to help you get an estimate of recommended coverage based on your age, lifestyle and current needs.

Get started on the plan that’s right for you.  Contact your representative today at 1-866-512-6109.

Representatives are registered through, and securities are sold through, CUNA Brokerage Services, Inc. (CBSI), member NASD/SIPC, 2000 Heritage Way, Waverly, Iowa 50677, toll-free 866-512-6109. Nondeposit investment products are not federally insured, involve investment risk, may lose value, and are not obligations of or guaranteed by the credit union.
